What is a Word by word translation?

International students are required to provide translated academic documents, when these are not in English. Often the requirement states that the translation must be done "word by word".

The reason for the requirement is that translations cannot be interpretative, they must not attempt to interpret the academic equivalence of the document to the American system. Grades, credits and averages must be stated as provided in the original document. If the American counterpart requires an academic equivalency, the original document PLUS the translated document prepared by Legal Translation Systems must be submitted to the
Academic Equivalency agency. They will then prepare an interpretative report.

A few universities and schools do not require academic equivalencies.

Legal Translation Systems does word per word translations of academic documents from the following countries: Brazil, Canada, Portugal, Haiti, Angola, Mozambique, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Monaco, San Marino, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Panama, Suriname, Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten, Dominican Republic, Togo, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Morocco, Mauritania, Cameroon, French Guiana, Martinique , Guadeloupe, St. Barth, St. Pierre et Miquelon, French Polynesia, Algeria, Tunisia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Brazzaville) Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea Bissau, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles

Certified translations of medical certificates

Certified translations of medical certificates might by required for a number of reasons, including:
a) Immigration - to justify length of absence from the country for green card holders, or in support of advance parole, to justify travel for persons under immigration status adjustment proceedings;
b) for insurance companies - to submit claims, including hospital bills
c) for litigation - to be used as evidence
d) to submit to physicians in the USA - to be used in patient treatment, medical history, aid in diagnosis, etc
e) for submission to places of employment - to justify long absences

Medical documents can be one page documents, to multiple page documents. They can run from very simple, single line diagnosis, to multiple page surgery descriptions, including exam results etc. Often, they are submitted with medical and hospital bills.
Patient charts might be required by insurance companies and litigation.

May of these documents are handwritten, in poor handwriting, and in such cases, the translator is forced to indicate illegible on the document. We do suggest that you require a typewritten document for international submission, which will not only facilitate our work, but also ensure as much information as possible is conveyed to the U.S. counterparty.

Immigration advance parole documents

When you have a pending immigration case, you may be able to request to travel to your country of origin based on humanitarian grounds. Generally, due to illness in the family.

Any document submitted in support of the request, such as medical letters, hospital record, personal statements, personal letter, emails, etc., must be translated if the original document is written in a language other than English.

When requesting medical letters, we suggest that you ask the physician to produce a typed document, for doctor handwriting is known to be difficult. Any words that cannot be properly deciphered in the document, will be referred as "illegible" in the translation.
At the present time, Legal Translation Systems is able to provide translations of such documents from Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Dutch.
